Whenever there is any requirement from the client to include human element then you should use photo-based mockups. For freelancing projects, you may have used 3D rendered mockups as they look more photo-realistic and clean. Photo-based are mockups created with real photographs taken by DSLR or high-end phones.
Minimalism is the best approach when it comes to working online as you need to stay professional and not go for new experiments. There were times when we were sharing digital mockups but after 3D and 4D software, there are no more mockups prepared by designers in digital softwares.
